New South Wales: How to obtain your first driver’s License
It’s time to start the process. We’ll break down the application process to help you understand it. It can be a costly and lengthy process to get your NSW driver’s License! You must take an eye test and then a Driver Knowledge Test.
Get your NSW driver’s License – Official Graduated Licensing Scheme.
Sincerity, the whole process appears very complex to other countries. You can only get a NSW Driver’s License in New South Wales through the NSW Graduated Licensing Scheme.
What is a Graduated Licensing System?
You must follow the (GLS), or Graduated Licensing Scheme, to obtain a full license. The process begins with a provisional license and takes you through a series of tests and stages before you receive your full NSW license.
The high number of accidents in NSW involving inexperienced learner drivers made this process more difficult. For novice drivers, the first six months when driving alone are the most dangerous. For example, P1s are ten times more likely to have a crash than learners. Since its introduction, the number of young motorists killed on New South Wales’ roads has decreased by 50%.
How do I get my NSW Driver’s Licence now that we understand the GLS scheme?
NSW Driving Licence Overview: From a learner’s License to a full license
You must pass six stages to get your NSW driver’s Licence. The process will take you from being a learner driver up to holding a full NSW license:
Pass the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT).
You must pass the Driver Knowledge Test to get your learner’s License.
Stage two (if you are under 25): 120 hours of driving instruction with a qualified instructor
You must log 120 hours of driving under supervision in the second stage. Before you can take the driving test, you will need to show proof of these hours. Before moving on to the Hazard Perception Test’s third stage, you must hold your learner’s License for at least 10 (10) months.
Take the Hazard Perception Test
The third stage is the Hazard Perception Test. This computerized touch-screen exam tests your ability to recognize potentially dangerous situations and respond accordingly.
Notes for those under 25: You must hold your learner’s License for a minimum of twelve (12) months and complete one hundred twenty (120), including twenty (20) hours of night driving before you can move to the next level.
Notes for those over 25: You can proceed to the next level after passing the HPT.
Book and pass the driving test
The fourth stage is booking and passing your driving test for your P1 (red). Before moving on to the next level, you must hold your P1 license for at least 12 months.
Stage five – upgrade to NSW provisional P2 (green) license
You can apply for the NSW P2 (green License) after you have held the P1 license for at least one (1) year. After obtaining your P2 license, you must wait at least 24 months to progress to stage 6.
Note: Drivers/provisional P2 license holders who are suspended for unsafe driving behavior must hold their P2 driver’s License for six (6) additional months for each suspension received during the P2 process
Apply for a full, unrestricted NSW driver’s Licence.

What is the age limit to drive in NSW? 16 years.
Your age is the first obstacle you must overcome! New South Wales has a minimum driving age of 16 years. In this guide, we will stick to the NSW rules.
Once you have passed the eye test, the next step is to prove that you are who you say you are and then verify your identity. After you pass the Driver Knowledge Test, you can move on to the next exciting part of your NSW Driver Licence journey.
What is the Driver Knowledge Test? How do you pass it?
It’s time to learn what the Driver Knowledge Test is and what you must do to obtain your NSW driver’s License. This is a road rules test that uses a computer. To pass the test, you must answer 45 questions on road safety and general information. You must pay for each test you take, so it’s worth studying!
How does the Driver Knowledge Test work?
You will need to sit in front of the computer and take notes. The computer will randomly select questions out of a total of 600 questions. If you do not study beforehand, it could be costly to keep failing! This is a brief breakdown of the content of the test.
- To pass, you need to answer at least 12 of the 15 questions correctly.
- You need to answer at least 29 questions correctly to pass.
Note: If you answer the following incorrectly, you will immediately fail, and your test will be terminated.
- Four questions in the general knowledge section are incorrect
- There are two mistakes in the area of road safety
Our tip for the day is to read each question thoroughly before answering. It is optional to finish the test in a short time. So, take your time and get it right!

The Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) can be taken in English, Arabic, and Chinese. It is also available in Korean, Serbian Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Greek, Greek, Croatian, and Vietnamese. The test is offered in many languages.
